Facts
The "Final Position" teaching shift.
Most alphabet lessons focus on the initial sound. This episode is special because it literally shows kids how to find the X (Box, Wax, T-Rex) at the end of words, which is pretty cool. It's a fun way to address the lack of common English words that start with the "ks" sound.
Check out Maya Rudolph's improv performance of "Brainstorm"
Maya Rudolph's bit is known for its relaxed, improvised vibe. The idea was to show how people come up with lots of ideas without judging them, which is a key part of the curriculum for executive function.
Leela's "T-Rex" Costume Meta-Joke.
The script recognises Leela's well-known love of dinosaurs (which we saw in Episode 4113). This provides character continuity for long-term viewers while acting as the final "X" clue (T-Rex).
The "Pinocchio Process" Parody.
In Abby's Flying Fairy School, the "Pinocchio Process" is a bit of a joke. It's a story that parodies the 1883 Italian novel. It uses "transformation magic" to teach sequential problem-solving, requiring Blögg to complete three specific physical tasks to reverse his puppet state.
The Voice: The Chair Mechanics can be rotated.
This parody of the NBC reality show The Voice needed a special mechanical set. The chairs were set up to spin on a motorised axis, which was a bit of a physical comedy element designed to teach kids about auditory discrimination (listening to sounds vs. voices).
"Super Grover 2.0" and Simple Machines.
In The Cart Before the Horse, the curriculum focuses on STEM (Physics). Grover's got to figure out how to move a heavy load, and he's doing that by getting kids to experiment with different animals to see what happens.
Check out Stephanie D'Abruzzo's "Sand Creatures" vocals.
The "Sing" bit (First: Episode 3981) has some rare stop-motion animation of sand. This was cut from later HBO versions to shorten the runtime, so including it in the 2012 PBS airing was a "legacy" moment for the song originally written by Joe Raposo.
The Count By Two Kid series is all about Skip Counting.
In Cowboy the Musical, Elmo takes "Kitty-Cows" for a spin. It teaches skip counting by twos (2, 4, 6, 8, ...), which is a basic maths skill for multiplication, and it's set to a Western musical rhythm.
The "Tired Tiger" audio redub.
In Sounds of the Street, the tiger's allergies were added as a post-production audio effect. This was done to add a bit of a laugh to a standard hearing game, testing if kids could tell the difference between a "sneezing" sound and a "roaring" sound.
X Salute: Visual literacy.
The "X Salute" song uses real-world "environmental print." It encourages kids to look for the letter X on street signs, exit signs and labels, taking the lesson from the screen to the real world.
Parent's Guide
Big Bird and Snuffy present a show about the letter of the day. They have to deal with a logical reasoning challenge when their letter breaks. They meet a box and a ball of wax. A T-Rex joins the group. Just so you know, none of these items start with the same letter. Friends start off by looking at the beginning of the words and then move on to the end. They find out a bit of a secret about phonics and literacy. All these words end with the letter X, which is a great way to teach preschoolers that information can be hidden in different places. It gets them thinking about things in new ways.
Murray and Ovejita visit a number cookoff to find the number 1. Kids learn to recognise the numeral through a yoga demonstration and a song. This is how we define one as a single unit. It's a basic maths lesson to get you started. You can use this example to help your child spot single objects in your home.
Elmo takes on a western persona in a cowboy musical. He takes care of kitty cows at a ranch. This segment is a preschool learning activity for skip counting. Elmo counts the animals in pairs, like 2 and 4. Kids can pick up maths skills while they're having fun with this story. They start to get their heads around patterns that lead to multiplication. Counting in groups is a great way to handle large numbers efficiently.
In one bit, Blogg accidentally turns himself into a puppet in a fairy school segment. He's got to complete three tasks to become a boy again. This narrative is a great tool for social and emotional learning. It's all about being persistent and having basic physical skills. Blogs are a bit like crickets and dancing with a donkey. He even swims with a whale. Every job he does means he has to get past a physical challenge or overcome a fear. He learns that staying determined and asking for help are the keys to success. This story is all about early childhood development goals. Growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Murray plays a game called Sounds of the Street. He asks viewers to identify the noises of a dog and a helicopter. He even includes a tiger with allergies. This activity helps toddlers learn to tell the difference between different sounds in their environment. It's a great way to build critical thinking skills. The game gets kids to notice the world around them. Try to use specific vocabulary to describe what you hear together.
Maya Rudolph joins Elmo to explain the word brainstorm. It's all about being creative. When you're trying to solve a tricky problem, it's a good idea to brainstorm as many ideas as you can. It'll help your child get going on a new project with confidence. Try this method to get your child to share their thoughts.
