Parent's Guide

Big Bird stops by the store to pick up some snacks for Granny Bird. He asks Mr. Hooper for Gs. He wants Swiss Gs and a Gs cake. Mr. Hooper gets that Big Bird means cheese. You learn that some letters sound similar to a child. Use a game to help your child learn to pronounce these sounds at home. Hey, just wondering if your kid would like a cup of cocoa or a cup of Gogo. Correcting sounds through play helps people learn without feeling frustrated.

Big Bird shows Bob a family album. He identifies his mom and little brother. You get the importance of family identity. Look through your own family photos with your child. It's important for kids to know their history, and knowing their relatives can help with that. This activity fosters a sense of connection within a broader family community.

Gordon's reading a map while Big Bird's teaching you about space. Big Bird runs close to the camera to show the word near. He runs away to show the world far. He keeps repeating this until he trips over a crate. You'll learn how objects' size changes based on their position. Try this at a park. Have your child stand near a tree and then run far to a bench. Movement helps the brain remember new words.

There's this cartoon that shows a zipper going up and down to teach the letter Z. It's a cool way to connect a physical task to a sound. Have your child use a zipper on a jacket while saying the word "zipper." This helps develop fine motor skills and phonetic memory.

Big Bird has a lot of problems before Granny Bird gets there. He loses his hat and bums his flowers. He ends up hurting his wing while hanging a sign. Luckily, the neighbors pitch in to help him out. Susan brings the fresh flowers, and Gordon hangs the sign. Mr. Hooper bakes a cake. The nest is all set for the guest. It's okay to ask for help. Friends support each other through tough times. Ask your child how they felt when the neighbors helped Big Bird. This helps build emotional intelligence and a spirit of helpfulness.

Oscar's feeling a bit down because he hasn't received any mail. Gordon gives him ten pieces of junk mail to cheer him up. They count the envelopes together. You see math being used in a social situation. Counting objects that interest a child makes the lesson relevant. Hey, why don't you give your kid a stack of old flyers to count into a bin? This practice links numbers and physical objects.
