Facts
The Season 50 premiere, Big Bird Across America, marked a big change for the series by moving the action off the physical street set for a large portion of the episode. The story follows Big Bird and Nina on a road trip from New York to California. This storyline was used to introduce the idea of geographical scale, as Big Bird initially believed he could walk across the United States by lunchtime.
Dave Grohl, the Foos' frontman, was in a high-energy musical segment with Big Bird and Elmo. They sang "Here We Go" as their anthem for the road trip. The production used a travelling "moving background" effect, where the Muppets stayed still while a scrolling digital landscape made it look like they were moving. Grohl filmed his parts in one afternoon between tour dates, using his own Gibson guitar for the track.
In the Foodie Truck segment, Cookie Monster and Gonger visited a dairy farm to learn about the pasteurisation process. The film crew followed the journey of the milk from the cow to the factory, where it's heated to a specific temperature to get rid of any harmful bacteria without boiling the liquid. They used a "top-down" camera angle for the kitchen scenes to emphasise the precise measurements needed for making fruit smoothies.
Abby Cadabby tried to use magic to transport the cast to California, but accidentally sent Chris to a "frozen wasteland" instead. This funny mishap was achieved using a chroma key (green screen) composite. The actor was filmed in a warm studio, with high-def footage of an Arctic environment layered behind him. We added digital "snow" particles in post-production to match the lighting on Chris's costume.
Big Bird had a bit of a funny moment when he said he didn't need a toothbrush or a comb because he's got a beak and feathers. For the "Singing" bit, the costume department made a custom pair of huge yellow pyjamas for the 8-foot-2-inch puppet. They were made from a lightweight silk-blend to stop them weighing down Matt Vogel, who took over from Caroll Spinney.
The "Number of the Day" bit had Elmo and Abby as astronauts counting Martians. This sequence used augmented reality (AR) graphics that appeared to float in the physical space with the puppets. The "7 Martians" were animated characters that interacted with the live-action Muppets, and the puppeteers had to look at monitors off-camera to make sure their eye lines matched the digital characters.
The episode ended with a video chat between Big Bird and Elmo, which is a reflection of the show's 2019 focus on digital communication. The production team used real-life mobile device interfaces to make the interaction look authentic to modern viewers. This framing device made it easy for the show to switch between the road trip footage and the regular "Elmo's World" segment.
Parent's Guide
Elmo and Abby dress up as astronauts to count Martians for the number 7. This space-themed adventure is a great way to get to grips with maths. It uses a fun story to help your child practise writing letters. Playing with the number 7 and an "out of this world" mission is a great way to help toddlers recognise numbers and track quantities in a fun setting.
Big Bird's planning a trip to visit his cousin in California. At first, he thinks he can just stroll there by lunchtime! Nina shows him a map of the US to help him with spatial reasoning. This story helps kids understand the difference between "near" and "far" by getting them to think about different places. As Big Bird packs his pyjamas and birdseed cookies, he shows how important it is to keep going and to be ready for a big change. A party to send them off shows how friends stay connected through video chats and shared memories, even when they're miles apart.
Dave Grohl joins Big Bird and Elmo for an energetic performance of "Here We Go." This musical collaboration celebrates the joy of exploration and encourages physical literacy. Your child is invited to clap and sing along, and get ready to dive into the adventures waiting just around the corner.
In Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck, Cookie and Gonger go on a mission to find milk for a fruit smoothie. This segment is a great STEM resource that takes viewers on a "field trip" to a farm and factory. Following the "farm to table" journey helps children to develop scientific inquiry skills and an appreciation for how food is processed. It encourages healthy habits and curiosity about daily nutrition.
The letter of the day is F. Elmo introduces it with claps and songs alongside his friends. This part of the programme is all about getting to know sounds in words, like the "f" in "friends" and "far". Pairing the letter with the theme of friendship makes the lesson feel really relevant. Your child will learn that "F" is the starting block for a bunch of important words, like "family."
The episode ends with a segment of Elmo's World all about friendship. Elmo looks at what it means to care for and play with others. It's a really important social and emotional tool that looks at the different ways friends can look and act. The episode is all about being there for a friend going through a tough time or sharing a special drawing. It's all about being empathetic and playing together. Your child will learn that while the world is big, friends are like a map that always brings you back home.
