Facts
Taran Killam made a guest appearance as Professor Buck Awe in the Season 45 premiere. Killam was a regular on Saturday Night Live when they filmed it. He sang a special fight song for the "School for Clucks" that used a marching band arrangement. This role let Killam use his background in improv to react to the chicken puppets' unpredictable movements on set.
Wendi McLendon-Covey was in a segment where she defined the word "strenuous." She did a bunch of physical stunts with Elmo, like a tug-of-war with a heavy animal. For the rock-lifting scene, they used a "weighted" prop to make it look realistic on camera. McLendon-Covey was also starring in the sitcom The Goldbergs when she filmed this appearance.
Super Grover 2.0 used an elephant and a chicken cheer squad to demonstrate a balancing act. This segment used 3D digital environments combined with physical Muppet performance. The "elephant" was a big model that needed a bunch of puppeteers to move the trunk and legs together with Grover's dialogue. It's all about the center of gravity and how weight distribution affects balance.
The Birdwalk Empire parody had a puppet version of actor Michael Shannon as Agent Van Cuckoo. The writers made this character to copy Shannon's intense performance style from the HBO series. Nucky Ducky and Clucky Luciano were the two main factions on the birdwalk. This part was a satire of adult cable dramas, and it focused on the idea of compromise between rival groups.
The Abby's Flying Fairy School segment introduced the "Fairy Dust Bunnies" as a magical obstacle. We created these characters using a "particle system" in the animation software. This allowed the bunnies to move like floating dust while keeping their shape. Mrs. Sparklenose's sneeze caused the characters to change, and the animators had to swap the 3D models of the students in real time.
Elmo the Musical: Bird the Musical had a fantasy sequence based on the geography of Machu Picchu. They used high-def digital plates of Peruvian mountains for the background. This segment was all about the life cycle of a bird, from egg to hatchling. The "egg" prop used a special light inside to make it look like the bird inside was moving when it sang.
Murray Monster visited a farm school for his field trip segment. They did on-location filming at an active agricultural site. Murray showed how food goes from the soil to the table by using real farm tools, like a hoe. The film crew had to use portable sound baffling to block out the noise of the farm machinery during the interview portions of the shoot.
The Count and his friends celebrated the number 4 with a stomp-style dance. This sequence used synchronized Foley sound effects to really drive home that heavy "stomping" noise. Each "stomp" was timed to a visual graphic of the number 4 appearing on screen. This made it clear that there's a connection between physical movement and counting in a rhythmic way.
Parent's Guide
Wendi McLendon-Covey and Elmo look up the word "strenuous." They do physically demanding tasks to show what it means to put in a lot of effort. This vocabulary lesson teaches your child that some activities require a lot of energy.
In Abby's Flying Fairy School, students have to deal with a magical mess. Blögg tries to hide the toys under a magic carpet and releases Fairy Dust Bunnies. This segment is all about getting you to be more fluent in math and recognize patterns. The fairies have to count how many times a nose blinks to reverse a spell. This reinforces one-to-one correspondence. Your child learns that it's better to follow directions than to take shortcuts.
Murray Monster and Ovejita visit a farm school to learn about agriculture. This segment is all about promoting scientific inquiry and healthy habits. Murray learns how to feed the animals and grow food with a hoe. Your child gets to see how vegetables are grown. It gets people thinking about the environment and where food comes from. Farm work is a great way to learn hands-on.
The main story is about Professor Buck Awe's School for Clucks. Elmo helps rowdy chickens get ready for school by teaching them social-emotional skills. He uses songs to encourage positive behavior in the classroom and help students regulate themselves. Your child will learn that listening involves the ears, eyes, and mouth. Waiting for your turn is a big part of being a student. This story helps preschoolers picture what a classroom looks like. Cooperation and respect are the foundations of education.
Birdwalk Empire is a parody with Nucky Ducky and Clucky Luciano. There's a heated debate about different styles of walking. Agent Van Cuckoo helps the birds come up with a new walk they can do together. This segment is a great example of conflict resolution and diversity. Your child will see that creativity is the key to making connections. Collaboration helps everyone find common ground.
The Count celebrates the number 4 with a series of stomps. There's a lively animation of four dancing chickens at a party. Super Grover 2.0 in Balancing Act backs this lesson up. Grover helps a cheer squad find their center of gravity. This gives a STEM lesson on physics and equilibrium. Grover uses the scientific method to test out different weight distribution options. These activities help toddlers develop spatial reasoning skills and understand the number 4.
